LPG stands for Liquid Petroleum Gas. It is a manufactured gas that is commonly stored under pressure and made available to the consumer for various purposes. Its major components are propane and butane, made as a byproduct of refining crude oil. Because of its gaseous state, it is stored as a liquid under pressure in gas cylinders. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a valuable energy source used worldwide for different business applications. In Uganda, the use of LPG as a source of fuel has increased. The use of LPG is being encouraged to replace non-sustainable energy sources of biomass, especially in rural areas.
There are three grades of LPG available as heating fuels: commercial-grade propane, engine fuel-grade propane (also known as HD-5 propane), and commercial-grade butane. In addition, there are high-purity grades of LPG available for laboratory work and for use as aerosol propellants.
LPG is composed hydrocarbons containing three or four carbon atoms. The normal components of LPG thus, are propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). Small concentrations of other hydrocarbons may also be present. LPG burns readily in air and has an energy content similar to petrol and twice the heat energy of natural gas.
The primary components of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are propane, butane, propylene, butylene, and isobutane. LPG is a highly flammable mixture of these hydrocarbon gases which is widely used as a fuel in household cooking applications.
LPG is prepared by refining petroleum or "wet" natural gas, and is almost entirely derived from fossil fuel sources, being manufactured during the refining of petroleum (crude oil), or extracted from petroleum or natural gas streams as they emerge from the ground.
